William Tsang, Head of Research at Chartwell Capital, participated in a panel discussion titled ‘Investor Intelligence: Q&A with the Investors, Panel with the Buy Side and Sell Side’ at the IR Magazine Awards & Conference Greater China, held in Hong Kong on 7 December 2017.
During the panel discussion, William explained his role in research within a buy-side firm as a separation of portfolio management and equity research to enable a cross and balance check of these functions. In his response to the question on what attributes good investor relations, he pointed out that communication– having comprehensive knowledge on the company, understanding senior management’s vision, direction and strategy and being clear about what investors like and do not like about the company– is key. “This helps with due diligence and can thereby create trust between investors and listed companies,” he said.
The panel also discussed the implications of MiFID II on paid research and corporate access in Hong Kong. William believes that a lot of the buy-side research will move back in-house, and IROs will have to take on a bigger role to reach out to existing and new investors with better investment insights and increased corporate access.
